Attic Ventilation

It’s easy to be green. Of course the best time to install attic ventilation is when you are installing a new roof. However it is never too late or too early to assure adequate ventilation is working for you in your attic. The truth is this often overlooked tool is a very cost effective way to gain the greatest rewards in lowering your utility costs. Proper ventilation allows for continuous airflow in attics. It is estimated that 9 out of 10 homes do not have adequate ventilation. In Arizona when attics can reach 160° or more, moving hot air can have a significant impact on how hard your air conditioning unit has to work while also extending the life of your roof. In fact most Shingle warranties state that failure to have adequate ventilation could in fact void the manufacturer’s warranty.

Attic Venting

Attic Venting Key Concepts
Attic ventilation is an important aspect of maintaining the structure of your home as well as saving energy. Improper attic venting can lead to moisture buildup that can cause mold growth and also cause wood rot. The key to proper attic ventilation is to create continuous air circulation throughout the attic space while preventing moisture from entering. In an ideal venting system, air should enter the attic from the eaves or soffits and escape outside at the roofs ridge.

Did you know?

The rule of thumb is for every 300 sq. ft. of attic floor space; you need 1 sq. ft. of ventilation (equal mix of intake and exhaust).

There are a variety of ventilation options available. The good news is that this small relatively inexpensive investment can go a long way to save you money.
